What are Tethered Oral Tissues
(tongue and lip ties):

Tethered oral tissues (TOTs) are tongue, lip, and buccal (cheek) ties. These are circumstances when the tissue under the tongue (frenulum) is not allowing the tongue to function the way it needs to. This is called ankyloglossia and the tissue can be tight, thick or thin, or even submucosal (the thin lining of tissue that covers the inside parts of the mouth).

Diagnosing TOTs can be very subjective and requires a skilled therapist with extensive TOTs training and experience to provide a differential diagnosis. Lori has years of demonstrated competency and skills to perform a thorough assessment of both structure and function of TOTs. As an SLP, Lori cannot determine if surgical intervention is necessary, however she has created a fabulous team of preferred providers in the Louisville area inclusive of pediatric dentists, ENTs, and oral surgeons to refer to when necessary. Other team members that Lori collaborates with to provide necessary overall body interventions are occupational therapists, physical therapists, bodyworkers, and chiropractors.

If your suspect that your child has any signs or symptoms of TOTs, Lori can assist you with a differential diagnosis to determine if they have clinical implications of TOTs. She can then assist you in assembling your team to provide the necessary intervention for the child. It is important to note that not all children with TOTs require surgical intervention, however, Lori can create the appropriate treatment plan regarding their specific needs. When surgical intervention is warranted, it is imperative that a pre-op and post-op program are adhered to.
